transparency and blessings
Dear readers, can I be really honest and transparent with you?
I'm kind of overwhelmed right now, thinking about my life at the moment. I don't need to give you my detailed schedule, but suffice it to say I am at school/work for an average of 9 1/2 hours ever day Monday-Friday. A lot of that time is in the evenings (for example, Wednesdays I don't get home till 10, and Thursdays my hubby doesn't get home till 9.) Meals have been sporadic, housecleaning even more so, and I constantly miss my husband because we don't see each other nearly enough.
Now, I know a LOT of people have schedules like this or busier, but it's a little more crazy than we've had in previous semesters. And I'm definitely not looking for sympathy; I know I've gotten myself into this! But I like being open with you. As cheery and upbeat as I seem on here and on Facebook etc., I don't always feel that way. Sometimes I'm snippy with my husband. I'm very often not understanding. Some days I'm so tired I feel like I don't do anything well because I can't focus. We've eaten convenience food way more times in the last two and a half weeks than I care to admit. And I definitely don't want you to see what my house looks like right now (although at the moment it's not bad in comparison with last week).
On the other hand...
I have been so blessed in the last three weeks it would take a long time to tell you about it all. And I'm really, really happy with my life.
I've gotten to start a little tiny ministry in our home once a week, by inviting girls from school over for tea, coffee, something homemade and baked, and visiting. I want to incorporate some Bible study into these get-togethers soon, too. This has been on my heart for months and I'm so excited to finally be able to do it. Joshua is incredibly supportive and has made this a high priority for me/us.
I absolutely LOVE my classes (all of them, which isn't always the case), and two of them in particular are going to be incredibly helpful with advancing my blogging and writing careers. I have big dreams for this blog, and I can't even tell you how excited I am at the prospect of some major projects this semester.
In less than three weeks of classes I've already made a new friend and strengthened old friendships. I'm excited to connect with people this year that I haven't connected with much.
Despite not spending tons of time together like we did over the summer, the time Joshua and I have had together has been quality. He brought me lunch today (frozen pizza is sometimes such a blessing), and we had a great talk for more than half an hour about something other than classes, work, and scheduling. I can't tell you how much we needed that or how refreshing it was.
There's so much more that I am so incredibly thankful for. God has been showing himself to me in new ways thanks to a class that requires we do Bible study and spend time praying and meditating. I've been able to worship in chapel at least twice a week. And boy, I love theology classes, and getting to talk faith-stuff with dear friends and classmates.
So as crazy life is... it is so, so good right now. As always, of course. I have a job I love...classes I love...friends I love...and of course a husband I am absolutely crazy for. And God amazes and awes me with how he heaps his love on us till I just overflow.
When life feels rough, I just look at the good things and thank God for them... and then a messy kitchen and sleep deprivation really don't look so big after all.

Keeping Priorities in Order
A new school year is beginning soon. For us, it's in two weeks; for some of you, it may have already begun! With a change in schedule, priorities can get shifted around. Sometimes that's necessary. But I'm taking a hard look this semester at my priorities and where they stand.
- God should always be number one. Some days (many days, if I'm honest) my Bible goes unopened. Sure, we do Portals of Prayer almost every day, and pray together daily, but my personal Bible study time is definitely lacking. That's something that I am constantly working on, and it's something I can't slack on when school starts. Especially when life gets busier, I'm going to need to be in the Word even more, otherwise life will just fall apart.
- My husband should always be the second most important person in my life! I often find myself caught up in the busyness of the school year, trying to socialize in between classes, work, and homework-- and sometimes my husband gets neglected. This should not be! My husband is my closest family, my very best friend, and my partner for life--nourishing our marriage needs to be way at the top of my priority list.
- Next should be time for family and friends. This doesn't happen during the school year as much as I'd like, partly because my family lives far away and Joshua's is even busier than we are. But we try to see them as often as we practically can.
- After my relationships come my responsibilities. First and foremost is my calling as a homemaker: planning and preparing meals, keeping up with laundry, keeping our home clean and presentable.
- Next I need to focus on my jobs, the ways I financially contribute to our little family. Blogging is one of my jobs, too--it's an important part of what I do and who I am.
- Finally comes school, and with that, homework. Obviously, attending classes on a day-to-day basis is a non-negotiable, and I always turn in homework on time, but it's not the most important aspect of my life, or the one I should be spending the most time and attention on.
- Mixed in here is spending some time focusing on myself, but that cannot be my top priority. Obviously I need to take care of myself physically, and take some time to rest and relax daily (nourishing food, adequate sleep, and physical activity are absolute musts in every day!). But I need to spend the majority of my time focusing on others.
It's a lot to balance, and although your roles, relationships and responsibilities may look a little different, I'm sure you have a lot to balance in your life as well.
How are your priorities lining up? Who or what is at the top of your list?
Is it your husband? Your children? Your job? Your writing? Yourself?
If God isn't at the top, followed closely by your spouse, the rest of your priorities won't line up right. The Lord needs to be the main focus of your life, the center around which everything else revolves. It's His Word that will keep you grounded and able to fulfill all your other roles and responsibilities the best you can. Trust me, I need to remind myself of this very often!
If spouse and family aren't way toward the top of your priority list, simply speaking, you're failing in your primary callings. We all have a variety of vocations--roles to which God has called us. If you're married and/or a parent, those vocations are your first and most important! No matter what job you have (even if it's a pastor, a doctor, a lawyer, a police officer), whatever it is, it's not as important as your first calling, which is to your family.
I have to remember this on a very regular basis. It's so easy to get caught up in thinking "but when I'm working I'm doing it for my family!" Or in my case, "When I'm spending all my time cooking and cleaning and taking care of the house, I'm doing it for my husband!" Most times he'd rather I spend time with him, not spend time doing dishes or cleaning the bathroom. Obviously those things need to get done, but they're not nearly as important as investing in my relationship with my husband.
So yep, I sometimes struggle with keeping my priorities in order. I think we all do to some extent.
I find that it helps when I schedule time for those things that are most important. I do well with a written, detailed schedule, and if I put "Bible study and prayer" for the first half-hour of each day, I'm very likely to do it. If I decide that Tuesday and Friday nights, nothing goes on the calendar because those two nights are set aside for time with my husband, we'll actually spend that time together. If I schedule a couple hours a day for homework, it will happen in those times and not get pushed to evenings when I should be spending time with my husband. Those are some things I'm going to do to keep my priorities in order this school year.
What are you going to do this year to keep your priorities lined up? Looking at yourself, what order are you priorities in right now?

Top X (10) reasons I'm excited for summer
This was my husband's idea. X is the Roman numeral for ten. Bingo! A "top-ten" post! Next week I'll do a top-ten things I've learned during the A-Z Challenge. It's been quite a month!
Presenting-- the top X reasons I'm looking forward to this summer:
X: No homework. I don't mind working during the day as long as I can come home and relax and not have homework hanging over my head!
IX: Summer clothes. Hello, skirts, sundresses, tank tops and shorts! I'm especially excited to be wearing my sundresses again. Just pulled one out today for the first time this year!
VIII: Time to get the house clean. No, seriously. I was thinking up a list this morning of everything I want to get done around the house as soon as school lets out.
VII: Summer work. I have a JOB this summer! Working at the campus library! With some of the loveliest ladies ever! Can you tell I'm a little excited about this one?
VI: Weddings. FOUR of them, to be exact, and three of the four within eight days of each other! In two of those three I'm a bridesmaid, and in one of those two my husband is a groomsman (we get to walk down the aisle together again)! I can hardly wait to celebrate the marriages of some very, very dear friends--and especially my brother-in-law and future sister-in-law!
V: The farmers' market. And the garden of one of my teacher-friends. I am looking forward SO much to fresh produce, artisan breads, and fresh flowers.
IV: Time with family and friends. My sister's confirmation is in just a couple weeks, we'll be in WI again at my parents' for one of the weddings, and they're coming in July (over my birthday week!). Plus in August we're going to visit some dear friends after they move, and I get to meet one of my dear blogging friends when she and her husband visit us! AND several of my closest girlfriends from school will be staying in town this summer to work, so I am anticipating some amazing girls' nights and thrift-shopping days!
III: Blogging projects. In addition to the eBook sale (going on next week! don't miss this!), I have a few other plans up my sleeve for this summer. I'll let you know more as I know more, myself! I'm also excited to have more time for blogging in general.
II: Time to do more projects around the house and in the kitchen. I'm hoping to find some nightstands and furniture for kitchen storage at garage sales this summer. I also want to start making sourdough, do a better job keeping up with my kombucha, and develop a really healthy (but really yummy!) brownie recipe. :)
I: The number-one reason I'm excited for this summer? More time with my husband!! Life can get so crazy during the school year... I'm looking forward to quiet, restful evenings together, fun weekends, and trips to see family and friends together. This is definitely the best thing about summers: I get to hang out with my best friend!

{Focus} On My Schedule
Most of my childhood, my days were fairly unstructured. There were, of course, expectations for each day-make bed, do schoolwork, help around the house--but we were never on a rigid schedule. That lasted through high school (one of the lovely benefits of homeschooling!), but college changed my lifestyle considerably. Now I have to be in classes at specific times each day and I have a set work schedule. This all changes every semester, so each semester we have to adjust our daily schedule at home a little.
I was talking to a friend yesterday, lamenting how we haven't been very productive over Christmas break simply because we have no schedule (although classes start again on Monday). I realized that if I had given myself a schedule--not necessarily rigid, but at least some structure to a day--I could have gotten a lot more done over break. So I've decided that, for this semester, I'm going to give myself a schedule for while I'm at home, not just at class and work.
I also want to make goals when it comes to housework. I have a hard time getting caught up on housework once life gets busy with school and other commitments. This semester I want to stay on top of the cleaning so it doesn't get out of hand. I know that if I don't set small goals for myself I tend to get overwhelmed and don't feel like doing anything at all, so I'll do one or two easy cleaning jobs a day, and that way I know it will all get done.
My class schedule this semester is fairly easy; I don't start classes till noon on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. My Tuesday/Thursday classes start at 8. I want to get up at the same time every day, so I'll be getting up "early" on MWF and, ideally, have time to get a lot of things done those mornings. Joshua has to be at class at the same time every day, 10:00.
An ideal morning for me this semester will look like this:
6:00 out of bed, get in shower
6:15 get dressed, do hair/makeup
6:30, get tea or coffee brewing, read my Bible at the kitchen table (this will give me incentive to get the kitchen all cleaned up before I go to bed)
7:00 start breakfast (I generally make quick breakfasts--oatmeal, eggs, or something I've prepared the night before). On MWF I'll have time to make a bigger breakfast; probably on Tues/Thurs I'll eat by myself since Joshua doesn't have to leave as early as I do.
7:30 Tues/Thurs, get ready to leave for class. I still plan on walking/biking a lot to school, even though we have the car now, but it's a 20-minute walk or a 10-minute bike, so that will give me time to get my backpack ready.
Mon/Wed/Fri: 7:30, write/publish a blog post.
8:30, pack lunch, finish tidying kitchen.
9:00, Wednesdays, get ready to leave (we'll go to chapel together on Wednesdays).
9:00, Mon/Fri, housecleaning and homework.
11:30, get ready to leave for class.
What I am NOT going to put into my schedule is any computer time other than blogging. This weekend I'm planning on reorganizing my desk so I can put my computer away when I'm not using it, and thus cut down on the temptation to be on it so much. I have plenty of free time during the day, when I'm already at school, to check email and Facebook.
The chores I want to accomplish weekly are:
-clean the bathroom
-clean the kitchen floor
-dust/declutter/vacuum the living room
-dust/declutter/vacuum the bedroom
-pick up/organize the closet
Daily chores will include getting the dishes all done and kitchen cleaned up, tidying my desk, and basic wiping down in the bathroom.
Monday mornings: bathroom, and kitchen floor
Tuesday afternoons (I'll get home around 4:15): pick up/organize the closet
Friday mornings: dust/declutter/vacuum living room and bedroom
This weekend I'm going to make a master chart with both of our daily schedules on it. This will keep both of us on task, and that way we'll always know where the other one is going to be.
I'll keep you updated on how I do with this! I'm excited and a little nervous, but I know how satisfying it will be if I can accomplish this. My main reasons for setting this schedule for myself are so that I can {Focus} more on being in the Word, {Focus} on being a better homemaker, and {Focus} on using my time more productively. I hope that this will also reduce my stress!
Please be praying for me and Joshua as we start this new semester!

to keep on keepin' on
Today was the first day of school.
Technically, it's my senior year, but I have a year and a half to go and Joshua has two. So we'll be "super-seniors," which isn't that big a deal...a lot of people follow the five-year plan. Or four and a half, in my case.
We didn't get to bed nearly early enough last night, so that might contribute to my tiredness. I'm exhausted. It'll probably take a few days to get used to the school schedule again. I don't have a massively busy schedule, but it's plenty. Figuring in classes, work, homework, meal-making, cleaning, dishes, and time with friends and most importantly with Joshua...it's a little overwhelming. But I know we'll get into a system, and I'll get used to it. I always do. :)
So far I've only been to three of my eight classes. Two of them are choir and handbells, which both are very familiar. I have two new professors this semester, and I met both of them today. I think this will be a good semester. I'm looking forward to all my classes. They will all be useful and interesting. :)
I want to keep blogging, and linking up, but I have a feeling that, at least for a while, blogging might have to take the back burner. I know writing is really, really important, but did you see that list of everything I have to do every day?
Give me a couple weeks. At the most, a month. I'll keep writing as much as I can...but it might be a little less than usual in the next few weeks. Bear with me. Stick with me if you want to. Keep your eyes open... I'll keep posting. I'll be here. I just might be a little scarce for a while. :)
Because this is important to me. Writing. Blogging. Keeping up with this community. I know I have an obligation to my readers, to keep on keepin' on. I have even more of an obligation to myself. This is important.
But I talk a lot about priorities...keeping first things first. Blogging is an important thing, but it's not a first thing. Not right now. So it will happen--I hope fairly regularly--but I need to keep other things first: God. My husband. My friends. School. Work.
Thanks for sticking with me. :)

Of school and cooler weather...blessings abound
The seasons are changing...schedules are changing...routines will change. It's that time of year, and it gives me so much to thank and praise God for! It's good to be thankful...but it's essential to know to Who those thanks and praises go. I am thankful to God my Father, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for all the blessings He gives me every day, and in this new season of school and cooler weather.
Today's post is really late...but I am so thankful for that because it means that today is the first day of our four-day weekend. :) Joshua has two extra days off between his summer job, and school starting on Monday.
I am thankful for cooler weather! We've had the windows open every night. It's so wonderful. I'm very ready for fall!
I am thankful that my friends are coming back to campus this weekend! It's been a quiet summer...I'm so excited to see some very special people.
I'm so thankful for work. I LOVE the people whose houses I clean. I enjoy working catering at school. And I'm so excited to get back to working at the library on Monday!!!
I'm thankful for financial blessings. The bill for our schoolbooks this year was terrifying, but thanks to financial aid it's all covered! We were even able to help out my brother-in-law with buying books for his freshman year.
I'm thankful for family! In the last week my parents have celebrated their anniversary and both their birthdays, and my brother's birthday is tomorrow. Plus we spent last weekend at Joshua's parents. Our family is amazing. I love them so much. <3
I am so thankful for the school we go to. We have amazing professors, and it's such a blessing to be on a Christian campus. I get to go to chapel every day this semester, and I am looking forward to that so much. I'm also in three classes with Joshua and three with my best girlfriend, and that is an incredible blessing!
I am thankful that I get to be in "advance" hand bells, and choir, this semester. I love music, I love the directors, and I can't wait to be involved in our annual Christmas concert in December. It's also one of my favorite ways to praise Jesus--through music!
I love all the new things that come with this new season. It's a reminder of how good and great our God really is!!

Strength Renewed
It's getting toward the end of the summer. Many students and families are starting a new school year. Joshua and I have less than two weeks until school begins again for us.
I'm ready for a new schedule, a change of pace, a different routine. This summer has been wonderful, don't get me wrong--but I'm ready for some changes.
At the same time, I'm a little apprehensive. With the new school year will come new challenges: juggling being a wife and homemaker with being a full-time student and working part-time and trying to spend some time with friends, too. It's a bit overwhelming! (If you're feeling like you have a lot on your plate--you are not alone!)
A verse from Isaiah came to mind this morning. God said to Isaiah,
In the previous chapter of Isaiah, God spoke more comforting words:
I won't get through this coming school year on my own power. It will be with the strength of God, by his grace and his will, that I will live each day to his glory. I won't do that perfectly... but I can trust that God has forgiven me. And he chose me to be his servant knowing that I'm imperfect, so I know he can and will use me for his will despite my imperfections.
I can't wait to see where his strength will take me this year... to what new heights I'll soar. I wonder...where will God take you?

I'm ready for a new schedule, a change of pace, a different routine. This summer has been wonderful, don't get me wrong--but I'm ready for some changes.
At the same time, I'm a little apprehensive. With the new school year will come new challenges: juggling being a wife and homemaker with being a full-time student and working part-time and trying to spend some time with friends, too. It's a bit overwhelming! (If you're feeling like you have a lot on your plate--you are not alone!)
A verse from Isaiah came to mind this morning. God said to Isaiah,
"I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." -Isaiah 41:9b-10God has chosen me to serve him. He is always with me; he gives me strength and help. I have nothing to fear or worry about. And neither do you, no matter what your life looks like right now!
In the previous chapter of Isaiah, God spoke more comforting words:
"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary, and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." -Isaiah 41:28-31Our strength does not come from ourselves. Even youth (like me!) grow tired and weary. But God never does. Our God is everlasting--Creator of all that exists. It is when we put our hope in him, not in our own "strength," that we become strong. It is God who lifts us up.
