There IS a time for everything. But the notes in my Study Bible explain that in this passage, "The Teacher shows that we are subject to times and changes over which we have little or no control, and contrasts this state with God's eternity and soverignty."
We were made for eternity. There is a time for all things on this earth, but in the long run, earthly things don't have much eternal significance. What does have eternal significance are things like developing our relationship with God and our trust in Christ, through prayer (talking to him) and reading the Scriptures (listening to him). What matters is how God uses us to be a blessing to others and to share his Gospel; we have the privilege to be his instruments, as the body of Christ.
What matters in my life is not grades or money or how many people like me or what kind of clothes and car and house I have. What matters are my relationships with people, my relationship with God, and that I trust in him above all things.
Let me say with David, "But I trust in you, O LORD; I say, 'You are my God.' My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies and from those who pursue me. Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love." (Psalm 31:14-16)
